These Monarch butterflies migrate from their summer hatching locations along the Pacific coast to spend the winter in the shelter of a eucalyptus grove at nearby Vandenberg Air Force Base. (Before the transplanting of eucalyptus in California, the Monarchs sheltered in native cypress trees). Indian summer afternoons are delightful as Monarchs flutter through, looking for the nectar of late-blooming flowers to nourish them. They are not fearful of humans and will occasionally land on one's head or shoulders, but don't try to "pet" them as that can damage their wings.
