The village sign at Henlow takes the form of a carved wooden board. The images are of the parish church, St Mary the Virgin, and a barn owl with oak leaves and acorns. The name Henlow is believed to derive from the old English ‘henna hlaw’ meaning hill frequented by wild birds, which may account for the symbolism on the sign.

There is a brass plaque on the sign post which reads

It is believed that Mr Purdew’s legacy was the sum of £500.
