The Museum of the Cherokee Strip at 507 S. 4th is being extensively renovated and doubled in size and will re-open during the Fall of 2010 as Oklahoma's first regional museum. It will be known as the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center.
Located on the grounds of the Center, at the corner of 4th Street and Owen K. Garriott Road is a sculpture entitled "The Homesteaders." The artist is Harold T. Holden who is known as the "Cowboy Artist" for over 30 years. This is a sculpture of a pioneer father, mother and young girl, typical of those families who settled this area after the Cherokee Land Run of 1893.
The statue stands high on a masonry pedestal with a plaque that reads:
"The Homesteaders" Harold T. Holden Sculptor
Commissioned by Larry and Dolores McClure in honor and memory of their pioneer family. Dedicated September 16, 2007"
Additional Centennial donors are the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center, the Greater Enid Arts & Humanities Council and the City of Enid.
