On 9/11/2010 two steel beams from the Twin Towers were placed horizontally on two polished granite stands, alongside a reflective pool. This included a flyover by an aircraft from the Florida Air National Guard.Five members of Tequesta’s fire and police departments traveled by caravan to New York to pick up the two pieces of steel from the buildings that were destroyed on Sept. 11.
Tequesta Fire Department Dan Tilles helped the village obtain the two pieces of steel. After the assault on the World Trade Center, some of us reacted in shock, others in grief, but Jim Humpage felt we should have a structure to help us remember that day, one that was close to the street so that every time people drove by they would remember,” Campbell said. A small committee, Friends of Public Safety, was formed to spearhead the fundraising for the marble and glass memorial that sits amidst a fountain on the village green. “This memorial is a tribute to first responders who keep us safe and, over the last nine years, through contributions and an annual golf tournament, we’ve been able to raise $90,000 to build the memorial,” Campbell said.
