A steep descent of nearly 46 metres (150 feet) down 240 odd steps gains access to the beach at the Paritutu Rock end of Back Beach. It's a lot more strenuous climbing back up to the carpark from the beach.

From the western end of the carpark there used to be a gentle incline track down the cliff to the beach with a bit of a 2 metre drop off to the beach down a large boulder, but that all got washed away in successive storms some years ago.
There is also a very steep direct channel down the sand dune from the carpark to the beach, but you wouldn't want to climb up it.
In the interests of protection of the dune and safety for the public these steps were constructed as a viable descent and ascent between the carpark and the beach.
There is a landing halfway, and a handrail the whole way.
number of stairs (minimum 60): 243.00
stair landing (check if yes): yes
