An ape fountain was documented in the 14th century, but was abolished in 1585. A new ape fountain was built in the 17th century at a different location. The ape figure came to its current location in 1867.
In 1916 the original figure was brought into the history museum and replaced with a copy created by Jean Hym, 1973 a new copy was created by Ludwig Stocker.
The fountain is in a quiet courtyard with a little restaurant not far from the city hall.
