According to the Morton Arboretum's plant catalog, this specimen was collected in the wild as a seed by the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 1948.
The catalog states it was collected from the "edge of ditched rice field, Lichuan Hsien (Xian), Mo-tao-chi (Modaoqui), (formerly in Sichuan Prov.), Hubei Province, China (Zhonghua). Lat 30°10'00.0" N, Long 10°[sic]45'00.0" E."
The more likely longitude for the point of collection would be East 110° 45'.
Visiting this Dawn Redwood is fairly easy. Park at Parking Lot #20 located at the parking coordinates below. Walk northward to the Thornhill Trail and turn right. It is just a few steps away on the south side of the trail.
