For many years prior to the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers in the Salt Lake valley, tribes of Native Americans had made the valley their home. The Pioneers for the most part tried to maintain amicable relations with these natives. The experience and knowledge of these original inhabitants were often of great assistance to the new settlers.
