In Merced the original routing of US Route 99 was along 16th Street, which flanked west of Main Street. It was replaced by Freeway 99 in 1960, but is still signed as Business Route 99. The route includes period hotels and eateries such as the
The Branding Iron.
The Branding Iron is a steakhouse/restaurant that opened in 1952 along the old highway next to the Southern Pacific Train Depot. I have never eaten at the restaurant but I hear it has excellent fare. The building features as decoration on its walls cattle brands from more than 200 West Coast Ranches. The sign (My pics don't do it justice) was declared a Merced Landmark a few years ago, the building is a quaint log cabin styled commercial building.
