James Lemen was born in Berkeley County, Virginia on November 20, 1760. He
enlisted in 1777 and participated in the Battle of White Plains and served for 2
years. He moved to Illinois in 1786 and settled in New Design, which he founded.
At the suggestion of President Thomas Jefferson he built Richland Creek
Baptist Church, near Collinsville, which became first anti- slavery church in
Illinois. He along with his sons started many baptist churches in Illinois. He
died Jan 08,1823.
The monument is located on private property. The day I visited the land owner
was not home so I could not walk to the monument. The monument is visible from a
