The words were picked out by lead lettering, which has been removed.

This is a drinking fountain. Erected in 1885 from local slate making up the wall. Consisting of three square piers with rock faced bands and caps, flanked by rounded stones. The central pier has a cast iron drinking fountain with bowl and dog bowl below. The dedication above reads,

"IN/MEMORIAM/ERECTED BY/SUSANNA BEEVER/1885".

The section of road is less steep than the bends below, providing a place to rest for man and horse. The lane along the east side of Coniston Water starts here.
To left is a horse trough, with this inscription above the trough:
"A RIGHTEOUS MAN/ REGARDETH THE LIFE/ OF HIS BEAST"

from Proverbs 12:10.

To the right is a seat with an inscription above which is:

"HE SENDETH THE/ SPRINGS INTO THE/ RIVERS WHICH RUN/ AMONG THE HILLS"

from Psalm 104 verse 10.
