Robert Southey was born in Bristol on 12th August 1774. He was educated at Westminster School, but was expelled for criticizing flogging in the school magazine. His education was further set back by failing to gain a degree from Baliol College, Oxford. However, during his time at Balliol, Southey met up with Samuel Taylor Coleridge which helped to foster Southey’s utopian ideas.
Southey eventually decided to earn his living as a writer and started publishing poems. He lived at Greta Hall, Keswick, which he shared with the Coleridges. He also became friends with William and Dorothy Wordsworth. In 1813 he became a reluctant Poet Laureate.
Although now an obscure poet laureate, he is also known for publishing “The story of the three bears”, now known as Goldilocks and the three bears. Whether it was Southey’s own work or the writing down of an existing tale is not known.
The grave, situated behind the church tower, has been restored by the Brazilian Government. In addition to his grave in the churchyard there is a memorial to Robert Southey in the SE corner of the church.
