In West Bridgewater, on Milebrook Road, is the imaginary meeting of North 42 latitude and West 71 latitude.

My GPSr (as well as several map applications) mark this spot on the road about where it gently curves to the north (going east). Specifically, after taking several passes and stopping at 'zero point' the location was about the center line of the street, and about 15 feet from the centerline paint marking that was between two storm drains.

The weather was bright and sunny, and the area had some trees but otherwise had a clear window for satellite reception, so the coordinates on the GPSr should have been at normal accuracy. The batteries were weak and gave out later (when I substituted new batteries), but it seemed to be working at the time. Thus, I'm pretty confident that I came to the spot within a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Milebrook Road, in the town of West Bridgewater, is very near the town border with Bridgewater. In fact, the line may run by the back yard of the nearest house to the southeast. The houses are typical suburban ranch or split level houses. The yards are spacious, and there are trees all around. The towns are included in the Boston Metropolitan Area, but are rural enough to have orchards and horse pastures. Bring a map with you as it is easy to turn onto the wrong road and be sent in an entirely different direction (it happened to me!). The easiest way is from Route 24, take the exit for Route 106 heading east to West Bridgewater. In West Bridgewater center, take a right (go south) onto Route 28 toward Bridgewater. Travel on Route 28 (you will cross W 71 long. and stay close to it from now on), then take Bedford Street on your right. Continue on Bedford Street to the end. Take a left onto Aldrich Road, then a short distance, take Milebrook Road on your right, to the spot. That's not how I made it, but it seems more straightforward than trying to find South Street, which began my problems.

This spot, I reckon from perusing maps, is the only land confluence point within the borders of the state of Massachusetts. There is one that is just off the coast of Cape Cod, near the town of Truro. You could probably see the confluence from the dunes, but you would need a boat to get to the spot. Other close ones I have seen are in Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

I'm sure one of the neighbors, where I left my car, was wondering what I was doing - or had already seen people find the spot through the Degree Confluence Project. Frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't been taken already!
