These artworks were designed and constructed specifically for this site by the internationally-acclaimed Patrick Dougherty. Both are self-supporting without any fasteners. The birdnest-type construction uses local willow, which will enhance the charm of the gardens for a few decades. The sweet smell of fresh willow saplings is still perceptible near the work, even after two years. Eventually, the sculpture will return to the environment (probably via a park-maintenance wood chipper).

Although there doesn't seem to be any specific mention of volunteer assistants here in Redding, Mr. Dougherty often gets local volunteers involved in the preparation. As he says. "I'm dedicated to a kind of conversation with the world about sculpture. What turns me on is to make something big and public that's a statement, and then to stand behind it and have conversations with people -- almost use it as an excuse for the dialogue."
