Sir John Logan Campbell (1817 - 1912) known as the Father of Auckland. He was in Auckland before the establishment of the city and closely associated with many aspects of its growth. He arrived from Scotland via Australia early in 1840. He and his partner purchased Brown's Island of the Maori and set up business as merchants to the new settlement.
He was involved in the first export of cargo from Auckland and set up banks, insurance companies, shipping and a newspaper. He served terms in parliament, established an art school and gave Cornwall Park to Auckland. His grave is on the summit of One Tree Hill with the inscription: "If you seek a memorial look around you".
