In the year 1826, Prince Anuwongse of Laos, which at that time was subordinate to Siam (as Thailand was then known), led an army to the Siamese city of Korat in order to renounce his allegiance—directly. The Siamese governor of Korat was absent, thus the city was speedily taken, and a group of Siamese prisoners and hostages were secured, ready for transport back to Vientiene (the capital of Laos).
One of the prisoners was Khun (polite title = Mrs) Thao Suranari, the wife of the deputy governor. She sparked a rebellion amongst the prisoners, resulting in their release, which in turn led to the failure of the Laos invasion. In recognition of her services to the Kingdom she was honoured by the King of Siam with the title of 'Lady'.
A statue of her was installed at the town centre in 1934. The statue is in a major park, which is a popular area at night for locals. As with most statues in Thailand it is also a shrine. Local people are to be found at any time during the day and night paying their respects to her memory. The nickname of the statue is 'Yamo', which translates as grandmother Mo. The statue has become a widely recognised icon of the city and province.
