The A6129 divides Stanborough Park and its yachting lake in two. At the end of this road there is a roundabout which has a decaying boat on its side amongst the planting.

At first sight the use of a boat near to a yachting lake appears aptly symbolic. Research, however, shows that all is not what it seems. An article in the St Albans and Harpenden Review dated 1st April 2009 sheds more light on the roundabout and the controversy surrounding it. The article, entitled “Twelve boats for roundabouts in Welwyn Garden City”, claims that this roundabout is a pilot scheme and that the council intended to have 12 such roundabouts in the Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield area. The boats were apparently to be obtained from Woodlands Chandlery of Portishead. The project was to cost £240,000 and would involve a French consultant firm Geste Nauticale. Whether this project is to go ahead in these fiscally austere times is unknown.
