The Devonport Flats at 127 St. Aubyn Street, New Plymouth, were originally known as 'Waldie's Flats'. These units were designed by the New Plymouth architects Messenger, Griffiths and Taylor for Mr A. B. Waldie. They were built in two sections between 1922 and 1924, although one is dated 1923 and the other 1924.
They are a unique local example of metropolitan-style residential accommodation using reinforced concrete. New Zealand architects and builders pioneered the use of this material."
They have always been in private residential ownership, and forty years ago you could purchase a flat "for a song', but nowadays with their proximity to the sea and central New Plymouth the apartments are much, much more expensive. As such it is now a 'gated' apartment complex.
