This chedi encloses the excavation site of a famous battle between the Thai and Burmese armies at Nong Sarai, Suphan Buri, central Thailand, which occurred in 1593 AD. A famous incident in the battle (repeated widely in this area of Thailand) was a bout of personal combat between the two kings, King Naresuan of Thailand and King Ekathotsarot of Burma, on elephant back. The Burmese king did not survive the combat. Through this and other battles, King Naresuan liberated Thailand from Burmese rule and occupation.
King Naresuan then went on to invade Laos and Cambodia and Vietnam.
The chedi also houses a museum to the king. The museum contains diorama, information plaques, and some excellent oil paintings of the king's life.
