Located in southeastern Sanborn County, South Dakota, Letcher has a population of 157 as of July 2009. This shows a 11 percent decrease from the 2000 census.

Peoples who settled in the area, and eventually built the town were of German, Norwegian, Czech, Irish, and Dutch ancestries.

The town was platted in 1882 but was not incorporated until January 27, 1895. The school didn’t start for a few years and the first graduating class was in 1916.

The town was named for O.T. Letcher, who was Assistant Secretary of Dakota Territory, as well as part owner of the townsite.
