As the Union Army of the Potomac was successful in cutting railways around Petersburg, the retreating Confederate Army of Northern Virginia headed west to obtain rations by another route. The retreat was halted with two corps under Longstreet and Gordon, encamped at the small village of Appomattox Courthouse - and completely surrounded and cut off from supply lines. Skirmishes continued as General Robert E. Lee made his decision to surrender. In the last hours, nearly 700 men were killed, wounded, or captured.
The surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia ended this portion of the Civil War, but two more armies had to be taken until the entire war was finally ceased.
