This tank has provided proven battlefield performance over four decades and has been continuously advanced and upgraded with advanced weapon control, ammunition, applique armour and increasingly powerful engines. The M60 series main battle tanks of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the USA were deployed in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 during the Gulf Crisis.
M60 tanks entered service with the US Army in 1960. Upgrades and improvements were made with the M60A1, M60A2 and the highly successful M60A3, which incorporated improvements to the gun fire control and entered service in 1978.
Main gun: 105mm M68 rifled gun with 63 rounds of ammunition. Both gunner and commander are able to fire the gun and select the type of ammunition to be fired.
Coaxial weapon: 7.62mm M240 machine gun.
Engine: Continental AVDS-1790-2C 12 cylinder air-cooled diesel engine provides 750 bhp at a rotational speed of 2,400rpm.
Speed: Maximum cross-country speed: 10 to 12 mph and up to 30mph roadspeed.
Range: 312 miles.
Agility: The vehicle is able to negotiate vertical steps up to 36 inches, gradients up to 60% and side slopes up to 30%.
Water terrain: The tank can cross water up to 48 inches in depth without preparation and up to 90 inches in depth using the fording kit.
NOTE October 2014: I'm posting some information provided by a Visitor to this Waymark. He sounds like he knows what he's talking about:
"I know the sign in front of this tank says that it's an M60A3, but it's actually an M60A1. The lack of a barrel shroud and no little door on the right range finder blister give it away."
