the Sewickley Community Center, which was founded in 1939 to provide recreational and social programs to blacks who were barred from white recreational centers at a time when segregation was an accepted practice across the country.
The community center has a very distinctive history, and much of it can be found in the book “Their Story: The History of African Americans/Blacks in Edgeworth and Sewickley," a collection of 100 oral history interviews.
