Kerman was founded in 1891 by the Soouthern Pacific Railroad and named Collis in honor of Collis P. Huntington, one of the famed "Big 4" founders of the line. Land around the town was purchased by the Bank of California and two Los Angeles Capitalists in turn acquired much of the townsite from the Bank. The name Kerman was taken from the last names of these two investors William "Ker"choff and Jacob "Man"sar. Kerman was incorporated in 1946 and its motto is "Kerman, Where Community Comes First"
