This milestone is one of a series alongside the turnpike road from Barnard Castle and Darlington. The turnpike dates from 1749 when a road was constructed from Stockton to Barnard Castle through Darlington. There was also turnpike roads from Barnard Castle to West Auckland, to Bowes and over the moors to Brough.
