"Growing" is the name of the game in Edmond. It was first settled in the late 1800's. In 1887, the Santa Fe Railroad came through the area, and at Mile 103, a coal and watering station, a settlement sprung up which was first named Summit because it sits at the highest point between the Cimarron and North Canadian Rivers. The town was soon renamed Edmond after rancher Eddy B. Townsend. The Land Run of April 22, 1889 flooded the town with new settlers and the "growing" began.

In the newly opened Oklahoma Territory, Edmond was the site of:

**The first institute of higher learning, established in 1891 (the Oklahoma Territory Normal School) which is now the University of Central Oklahoma.

** The first public school house. which still stands at the intersection of 2nd and Boulevard and has been completely restored and is open to the public.

** The first newspaper, still operating as the Edmond Sun.

** The first church in the Oklahoma Territory, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, currently located at 9th and Boulevard.

** The first flour mill, the first library, and the first grocery.

Edmond sits 13 miles North of the capitol city of Oklahoma City and the population in 2010 is estimated to be close to 80,000. It is a prosperous city, with businesses, shopping centers, and residences that range upward into the millions of dollars. It sits at the crossroads of I-35 and I-40.

Edmond is definitely a Great Place to Grow.
