This superb film, produced for TV, featured historian Michael Wood using medieval court records to trace the fortunes of Codicote, in particular the family of Christina Cok.
The true story of Christina is followed by Michael, starting with her father Hugh, her husband William and her children John and Alice. Their story spans the first part of the 14th century and shows how families fared and prospered through property. In particular the role of women in this society is shown through the life of Christina.
The building in the shots is the actual site of Christina’s home. The present building dates from the 16th century and was the oldest licenced premises in Hertfordshire, as confirmed by the civic plaque on the wall.
