In the 1920's, Della Hallberg planted some Dutchman's Pipe and soon had Pipevine Swallowtails visiting, laying eggs and breeding onsite. Della's love of gardening and butterflies was passed on to her daughter Louise, who now runs the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens as a nonprofit organization. Louise Hallberg tells her story of How the Gardens Came to Be.

The gardens now cover nine acres of overgrown vines, thickets, meadows and flowering pathways. More than 40 varieties of butterflies are known to have visited the gardens. Visiting butterflies are looking for nectaring plants as well as larval plants to lay their eggs.

An Annual Open Gardens Celebration occurs every June. The sign on Oak Grove Avenue says "by appointment only". I came early on a quiet Sunday and took a small self-guided tour from a sign that said "Start Here"! School tours are available and if you want a personal guide, try contacting them ahead of time. Directions to the garden can be found at their website.
