This home was built by John Ladd in 1688 and was originally called Candor Hall. He was a friend and confidante of William Penn, founder of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania colony. Penn deeded Ladd 7000 acres of land between what is today the town Gloucester and Eagles Point (location of the Sunoco Refinery) fronting the Delaware River. This was part of the land that was bought from John Fenwick, one of the original proprietors of what was then called West Jersey. Ladd assisted William Penn in the laying out of the city of Philadelphia, with its familiar grid pattern and several open park areas, unique in the American colonies at that time. The location of this home gave birth to the neighborhood built around it in the early 1920s -- Colonial Manor.

The home was originally a two story brick structure that later saw two wings built of rough hewn timbers added to the structure. Several out buildings, including stables were located on the property. Over the years, the house was reduced in size until only the original prick structure remains as well as the stables, which are now garages. The home has been modernized fully, and some slight changes to the structure reflect this also.

The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
