This historic cross shaft lies on the village green in Bilton.

The shaft remains were reset in this position in 1897 and there is an inscription on it stating this. It is enclosed in black railings and lies near the village stocks.

The website below has further details:

'The old butter cross, which can also be still seen on the Greens is thought to be where people would leave food for plague victims to avoid contact with the disease themselves. The cross is very similar to another butter cross on Hillmorton Village Greens, just east of Bilton.'
