The station is an intercity express hold of the line Frankfurt's (Main) central station - Dresden's central station and belongs to the railway station category 2. It carries the official epithet Cultural railway station (german: Kulturbahnhof) which is noted on all boards in the railway station, and about 1 kilometer lies to the north of the Weimar city center at the end of the Carl August avenue.
The railway station was established in 1846 as an endpoint of a railroad line coming from Halle (Saale). In 1847 this distance was continued in the direction of the west to Erfurt which was practicable soon afterwards generally to Bebra. In 1876 followed the second distance which led over Jena to Gera. In 1887 the third distance about Bad Berka was opened after Krannichfeld and Blankenhain. In the same year the 1000-mm-small-time road followed as the fourth distance going back in the railway station to Großrudestedt near Sömmerda. This was closed down in 1946.
At the moment of the Weimar Republic the town was a capital of Thuringia. At that time, therefore, a new, representative receipt building was established in the neoclassicistic style. The railway station played a special role also at the moment of the national socialism as about the station and a feeder line beginning here the prisoner's transports to the concentration camp Buchenwald.
Then at GDR times the electrification of the section occurred from Naumburg to Erfurt.
In 2005 the railway station was chosen by the alliance per rail to the railway station of the year of its dimensions class.
