This display offers many samples of rocks and minerals found in and around Lake Superior, a major focus of the appropriately named Great Lakes Aquarium.
The title of the display is "Stories Written in Stone" and provides a short description of five major rock building periods. The introduction and the 5 subsection titles read as follows:
The rocks of the Lake Superior region are among the most complex - and most fascinating - in the world. They are the products of a series of dramatic geological processes that occurred over the past three billion years.
1) 2.7 Billion Years Ago - Canadian Shield: Foundation of the Continent.
2) 2 Billion Years Ago - Busy Stromatolites: Adding Oxygen to the Atmosphere.
3) 1.1 Billion Years Ago - Continental Rift: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.
4) 1.1 Billion to 200 Million Years Ago - Minerals and Metals Filling Bubbles and Cracks.
5) 600 Million to 500 Million Years Ago - Layers of Sediment: Today's Towering Cliffs.
