The United States Federal Government built the Stonington Harbor Lighthouse at the end of Stonington Point in 1823. Weather and erosion caused the lighthouse to be dismantled and moved farther inland to its present location where it functioned untill 1889. A second lighthouse was built on the breakwater in the mid 1880's and the Stonington Harbor lighthouse was no longer needed. The USGS dscignated the top of the tower a benchmark in 1904.
The Stonington Historical Society turned the lighthouse into the OLD LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM in 1927. It now contains marine, historical and cultural exhibits.
