City Point was a small community, that from 1700, was a very important regional port. It derived its importance because of its location on the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers.

The size of small completely changed in 1864. In 1864, the Army of the Potomac took control over the area. This army, under the control of General Ulysses S. Grant, transformed the port into the busiest port in the world at the time. Two major military establishemets were created here: a supply depot and military hospital. There were more than 100 ships docking and disembarking daily here. So much material came through that the Union Army built a railline from here to the troops at Petersburg.

Today, the National Park Service administers the site of Appomattox Manor. On the grounds is the originial cabin of General Grant, if only reconstructed from mostly original materials.

The site is open daily 9 am to 5 pm, with rangers staffing the house for interpretation. In order to gain access to the house and ranger, ring the bell of the entrance for assistance.
