Prior to Oklahoma statehood, this area was known as Tobucksy County in the Choctaw Nation. As the population grew, a town of Newburg was formed on January 23, 1897.
Chester C. Atwood settled this area and his land holdings grew over the years. At the time of Oklahoma statehood, county lines were re-drawn and Newburg now fell in Hughes County. On December 3, 1909, the town was renamed Atwood in honor of townsite owner, Chester C. Atwood.
