This old, 1223 m long, tunnel is located in Metsolahti close to new Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki railroad.
Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki railroad connected Finland´s Savo and Pohjanmaa railroads (north-south). The decision to build this connection was made in 1912, but difficult terrain and the World War I delayed the work so that the railroad was not opened to public transportation until November 1918. During the Civil War of Finland in early 1918 the Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki railroad served as a backbone to the “white” troops, connecting battlefields of Häme and Savo-Karjala. The railroad and especially the old Pönttövuori tunnel were heavily guarded during the War.
Electric trains needed a higher and wider tunnel, so in 1995 an economical solution was to build a new, 1421 m long tunnel close by the old one.
