As the story goes, on a Friday night in 1964, Dominic Bellissimo was tending bar at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY. A group of Dominic's friends showed up at the bar late in the evening very hungry. Dominic asked his mother, Teressa, to prepare something for his friends to eat.
Teressa went into the kitchen and deep fried some chicken parts that usually went into a pot for soup. These wings were then flavored with a secret sauce and served with celery sticks and blue cheese. They were an instant hit and it didn't take long for people to flock to the bar to experience this new taste sensation. From that evening on, chicken wings became a regular part of the menu at the Anchor Bar.
Over the past couple decades, the Anchor Bar has been the mecca for both locals and out-of-towners seeking the originator of the chicken wing.
Also mentioned in that same section of the book is the National Buffalo Wing festival, held every Labor Day weekend at Coca-Cola Field in downtown Buffalo. Upwards of 40 restaurants from across the country offer their variety of wings to thousands of people.
