The post office was established on July 13, 1892. The town was named for A. L. Welch, a local railroad official. The town was the hay and grain center for northern Craig County and was active in the raising of livestock and strip mining.

The town sits at the intersection of Highways 2 and 10, west of Miami and north of Vinita.
