Driving into Oklahoma from Kansas along Rt. 66, you will find Quapaw about 3 miles south of the border. Named for the Quapaw Indian tribe, meaning "downstream people," a post office was established here on June 9, 1897.
The town was originally a hay-shipping town at the turn of the 20th Century, and contained large cattle ranches. Its boom time was in 1917-1918 when zinc and lead mines opened and the population swelled. Dark Horse Mine which begun in 1904 was the mainstay of the town, until after WWI when the demand for zinc and lead decreased.
Mineral contamination has caused many problems in this area, with the town of Picher nearby closing up completely.
The town of Quapaw is known to be the site of the famous Spooklight, a phenomena that appears from time to time in this area. It is featured on the website
