This is a small green space beside a busy downtown street that is part of highway 22.
The plaque reads: "THE FAMILY" This statue is presented to the City of Trail from the citizens of Trail on the occasion of the City's 100th anniversary. It proudly represents the strength of our community, both past and present, looking confidently to the future.
Although it is a fine piece of Bronze sculpting and I do like it, I also find that it portrays the family unit in a stereotypical way. The composition: Mother, Father, daughter, son. The mother and wife is standing just behind the father and husband. The husband is carrying a lunch box signifying that he is the 'bread winner' The boy holds a hockey stick and a book. I take this to mean that you don't forsake school for playing sports.
This layout is not unforeseen though as this City is very 'blue collar' (The largest employer is the worlds largest lead zinc smelter in the world) and has generated sports athletes who have gone onto the NHL, MLB, the Olympics, semi pro soft ball, world curling and the list goes on and continues to grow.
