There are two battle that occurred here. The first, the battle of Glendale or Frayser's Farm occurred on June 30, 1862. The second was the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. The visitors center has electronic maps and displays on the two days of battle.

The immediate area of Glendale National Cemetery holds nearly 1200 graves. Many of these are the soldiers who died during battles occuring on June 30 and July 1, 1862.

These events all occured in the Pennisula Campaign. This was an effort by General George B. McClellan who landed at Fort Monroe on the Virginia Pennisula. He moved forward towards Richmond, only to be turned in a retreat. The Battles of 1862 interpreted at the Richmond National Battlefield are part of the Seven Days Battles. These were the final two battles in that series of a retreat.

Interestingly enough, the visitor center is located inside the Glendale National Cemetery. Rangers are available during the summer months, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, to give aid and assistance for area interpretation.

The cemetery itself, too, should be considered a stop along your tour of the massive battlefield. Over 1200 graves of our fallen soldiers, mostly from the Civil War, are interred here. Almost 1000, over 80%, of these remains were never identified.

Just down the road about two miles is the Malvern Hill Battlefield. Interpretive markers are placed around the area for explainations of what occurred her on July 1, 1862.

The secondary website is to the Civil War Travelor - Podcast page. There is a podcast for the Malvern Hill Battlefield. It is an excellent FREE resource to be downloaded prior to viewing the battlefield.
