In 1932 the absolute power of the king of Thailand was abolished in a coup, and a constitution was created for Thailand. In 1939 a monument in Bangkok was created to represent this new constitution, known in English as the "Democracy Monument" (WM8CYA).
The centrepiece of the Bangkok monument is a carved representation of a palm-leaf manuscript box holding the Thai constitution of 1932, on top of two golden offering bowls above a round turret.
There are smaller copies of this monument in many towns in Thailand, usually the provincial capital. The version for Surin is near the front fence of the carpark of the city government offices, perhaps not the most prestigious location. It is approximately 4m tall, the constitution sits on a plinth, blue, read and gold in colour (the Thai national colours). On the plinth is a plaque with the name of the donors.
