Before it became an Army fort, the area was known and used by the Native Americans as "Mool Mool," or "springs." There are many springs in the area, as well as a large stand of Garry oak trees that gave shelter in the winter. Fort Simcoe was an 1850s military fort during the NW Indian wars. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Fort Simcoe is now a Washington state park, and is located on the Yakama Indian Reservation near White Swan, Washington. It is a day use park with restored buildings and beautiful picnic areas. There are also trails around the park.
For birdwatchers, the elusive Lewis's woodpecker can be seen here regularly.
