This engraved marker is set in a stone near a flagpole in John Paul Jones Park.
The text of the marker is:
"THE
PROVINCE OF MAINE
ORIGINALLY EXTENDING FROM THE MERRIMAC TO
THE KENNEBEC RIVERS, WAS GRANTED AUGUST 10, 1622
TO
SIR FERDINANDO GORGES AND CAPTAIN JOHN MASON
BY
THE COUNCIL FOR NEW ENGLAND
ESTABLISHED AT PLYMOUTH BY KING JAMES I IN 1620.
THIS TERRITORY WAS DIVIDED BETWEEN THEM IN 1629 AND
CONFIRMED BY THE COUNCIL IN 1635, WHEN
GORGES RECEIVED THE EASTERN PORTION, EXTENDING
FROM THE PISCATAQUA TO THE KENNEBEC
WHICH THEREAFTER RETAINED THE
ORIGINAL NAME OF THE PROVINCE OF MAINE"
Underneath this plaque is a small plate which indicates: "ERECTED BY THE COLONIAL DAMES OF MAINE AUGUST 1931"
