When I visited the small city of Roi-Et, in north eastern Thailand (Esarn region), I was surprised to discover that an important symbol of the town is a musical instrument. The name of this instrument, as translated into English, is 'vode'. It is a pipe like instrument, of which I have absolutely no knowledge. Representations of vodes are to be found through out the city.

In this particular case, there are two large vodes, maybe 7m high, placed at either side of the entrance to the central park of Roi-Et. The vodes are easily seen as one approaches the park. There are several other waymarks and interesting sights in the area.

The park is named Somdech Phra Srinakarindra (Royal Park), and it is the principal public park, and spiritual heart, of the city, located in front of the city hall. The park is used as a venue for various cultural and social events of the province and city.

In the cool of the evening the park is packed with teenagers of both genders, who no doubt use the opportunity to mingle, meet, interact, and to spend their time discussing the cultural history of their city.

In the gallery there is a closeup of a vode, and a pic of a woman playing a vode. If anyone knows the correct English name for this instrument, and anything else about it, please let me know and I will amend this waymark to include this information.
