In nearby Church Brough was a Roman fort on the site of the current ruined castle. The Keep and castle were built inside the Roman camp on a drumlin. The Anglican church is near the castle to the south. When roads improved in the turnpike era the animal markets gradually moved to the linear development north. Now called Market Brough.
