In 1932 the absolute power of the king of Thailand was abolished in a coup, and a constitution was created for Thailand. In 1939 a monument in Bangkok was created to represent this new constitution, known in English as the "Democracy Monument" (WM8CYA).
The centrepiece of the Bangkok monument is a carved representation of a palm-leaf manuscript box holding the Thai constitution of 1932, on top of two golden offering bowls above a round turret.
In the centre of the small city of Roi-Et in north eastern Thailand, there is a small lake with a small isthmus, which has on it two major cultural sites, one of these is a symbolic replica of the Bangkok Democracy Monument. (The other is the City Pillar Shrine (WM95N5)). This is a 'scaled down' version of that to be found in Bangkok. Attractive in design and well presented.
