Lock No 34 or 11 Mile Lock is one of 44 locks along the Ohio & Erie Canal that lifted canal boats 395 feet between Cleveland and Akron. This particular lock provided a 9-foot elevation change. The canal operated from 1827 to 1913. During the great flood of 1913, many of the locks were destroyed thus ending transportation on the canal. After Cuyahoga Valley National Park was established in 1976, the park service acquired the canal lands from the State of Ohio and constructed the ever-popular Towpath Trail the entire length of the park.
