The creation of Akron City Hospital was the culmination of a dream of Boniface DeRoo, a Dutch immigrant whose will provided approximately $10,000 for the establishment of Akron’s first hospital. More than nine years elapsed after DeRoo’s death in 1883 before a group of 12 men organized the City Hospital Association. With voluntary donations of $10,000 each from Ohio C Barber and Thomas W Cornell, the association purchased the Bartges Homestead at 943 East Market St in 1892 for the sum of $30,000. The property consisted of five acres of land and a large and handsome brick house and suitable outbuildings that was made immediately available for the needs and purposes of such an institution. The hospital opened on October 11, 1892.

Additions to the hospital over the years have all but hidden the original building.
