On May 7, 1864, Union Generals Grant and Meade and their troops marched south from two intense days of fighting at Wilderness, VA towards Richmond, as did Confederate General Lee and his troops. Not far down Brock Rd., the armies met again at Spotsylvania Court House, and another battle began that lasted for two weeks.
Some of the bloodiest fighting occurred at the Bloody Angle of the Muleshoe Salient. Soldiers fought in close contact for almost twenty hours straight. It was the longest sustained hand-to-hand fight of the entire Civil War.
After the war, many veterans returned to erect monuments at the Bloody Angle, including the 49th New York Infantry. The granite monument stands at the location of Confederate earthworks which the NY regiment was able to seize and hold during the battle. There are granite cannon balls on top and the raised letters 49TH N.Y. VOLS are on the base at the back. It was dedicated on October 9, 1902.
